you stole my every rock and roll

Admission: I am mildly annoying about locking my bike.

I don’t know why this is the case. I have never had a bike stolen, and generally have a good opinion of humanity but somehow I just feel sick to my stomach at the idea of leaving my bike* unattended. Maybe this is socially fuelled paranoia.

But articles like this one** make me giggle, shudder, snicker, furrow my brow and wonder when it will stop all at the same time. Whatever you may feel about the editing on this article, it’s super long and I’m pretty sure I read the whole thing which must mean something.

Questions I ask you after reading this article:

Do you lock your bike like a crazed obsessive?
Or do you just loop a bike lock over your seat and hope people are fooled?
Are you a trusting soul?
How much is too much to spend on a bike lock?

And I am seriously asking you these questions. I think that my teeny weeny knog lock*** is evidence that my psychological paranoia is not matched by my lock investment.

And does anyone have BIKE INSURANCE?
What is bike insurance?
Should I get bike insurance?

  1. Not crazed about locking it, but if I know I’m going to be leaving it in public for more than a while (an hour?), I’ll lock it. That said, I don’t often carry a lock unless I know I’m going somewhere.
Normally at the supermarket I’ll tie it to a bar with the helmet strap, but I’m only gone 15 mins then.
I once did this at a coffee shop in West End and while sitting out the front, saw someone making to take off with it until I politely suggested that this wasn’t the best course of action.
That said, my bike’s worth about $700. Cheap compared to some, but I wouldn’t want to lose it. (Still, it’d give me an excuse to upgrade).

As to insurance, no idea. If you have home and contents insurance, it may be covered, but best to check.

    1. Apparently insurance is a crock. My faux-dad told me so…

I also think that, no matter how cheap your bike is it’s nice not to have it nicked in front of you or otherwise!

  2. That’s Shannon Leto’s bike. It was stolen awhile back. These were up around Hollywood. That sign is automatically awesome because Shannon Leto made it. :)
