What art costs?

If you have $2.99, and the time to make a few clicks, I would be humbled and grateful if you checked out the Review of Australian Fiction, one of Australia’s loveliest short fiction journals. Each edition, the review commissions an established author for a work of short fiction, and invites them to nominate an emerging author to accompany that commission.

Recently, I had the honour to be featured in the journal, together with Hoa Pham, Peril Magazine’s founding editor. Hoa’s work, The Lady of the Realm, is a Vietnamese historical fantasy from the mid 1950s till the present day. It follows the adventures of Lien, a clairvoyant searching for peace,  and like so much of Hoa’s writing, there is a beautiful, dark humanity that resonates longer after reading.

My work, The Transfer, is a refraction of a longer theatre work around a Filipino-Australian family in Brisbane at the time of Expo 88, which was developed in my time as Artist In Residence with La Boite Theatre.  This family, so very much my own, and yet so very different, traverses the intergenerational and intercultural divides that are intrinsic to migrant Australian experience, and it would be a delight to share this story with you.

The story is available for purchase here,
