Last week, I let you in on a few of the Brisbane Emerging Arts Festival secrets, the barrelling in of Simon Kindt and Betsy Turcot, the collaborations of Angela Willock and Megan Bartholomew, as well as the fly-by-night stylings of Tony Mutton.

Now the festival draws even closer, and I for one am building in my sense of excitement and joy. For those in the Valley area on Saturday evening (27 July) between 6.00 and 11.00pm, do come into the Judith Wright Centre for an annual celebration of some of Brisbane’s newest talent.

Together with the artists listed above, will be Brisbane poetry people:

  • Scott Sneddon, who will be featuring with the Aboriginal Center for Performing Arts in a piece so mysterious that even I don’t know what it is
  • Liz Bennett, who will be sharing her distinctive style of clear, direct poetry in some unexpected places before rapidly switching artistic caps to assist with another performance (also quite mysterious)
  • Yours truly who is honoured again to share some space and time with Betsy Turcot with “We Bury Not Burn”, a remix conversation of the works of Judith Wright, as seen through the lens of her long-secret love with Nugget Coombs, with some incredible visuals from Chloe Callistemon.

Don’t just trust me – why don’t you take a listen to this interview with Travis Dewan, festival director, and Simon Kindt,  on 4zzz’s At the Local.

This is the second year that I have been lucky enough to put together the spoken word program and one of the loveliest part of this process is getting to know the work of some very fine individuals, and collaborating with an amazing team of arts workers. hope to see you there this Saturday!

Five more sleeps until the Brisbane Emerging Art Festival. Very excited to be included in a line-up of fresh, diverse and inspiring poets.
