circle work

Apparently the stars are in a similar alignment to five years ago; Sonia knows what I mean. Five years ago was a whole other board game. This is what I was doing in Bogan Gate (fo’ shizzle) in February five years ago.

Somedays I feel I’m cutting circles again.

9 Feb 2006

We’re in the back paddock of Lowey’s place, throwing up dust behind a ridiculous, oversized, Kermit-green vehicle that was probably designed specifically for nipping between Chadstone and Carey in high-riding suburban style. Ribbons of dust tail the wheels – from which Matt has gleefully removed the traction – as I turn, initially panicked and then girlish-devilish, circles. Lowey’s wife, obviously unaware of her husband’s offer for us to use the paddock, comes out and stands at one edge of the tussocky grass, hands resolutely on ample hips, until we sheepishly go over to explain the enormous dissipating clouds of red dust and the terrified pack of galahs that just screamed over her clothesline. Later, three guys in a dinted silver Nissan lap the edges of the paddock, tooting their horn, circling their index fingers in the air, slapping the sides of the car: there’s shit-all to do in this town.

  1. Hmm, 2006 was the year that I weaned my middle daughter, my son went to kindy and I tried to finish a play about truth and poetry. We were living in Cairns and I saw a number of green Ute doing what you described above. I’ve never mustered the courage to do doughnuts in a hotted up car – what’s it like?

    1. I wish my mum was as funky as you!

Sadly, I need to acknowledge my ride as a horrible kermit Discovery from hireland generica.

It was, however, actually really really fun. Though kind of felt stupid at the same time. I think it was a part of trying it at 26, rather than 16. I was just painfully aware that I was a bit too old for it.

That said, I’ll post script you another file that might make you smile. I might have to make it some kind of you tube or something, so we’ll wait and see…

Child Pope Child Pope Child. Just making me smile still. I can’t wait til your book births!
