While I’m busy quoting my dad.
He also used to say that he had good news and bad news.
“In fifty years’ time, Eleanor, everyone is going to be drinking recycled urine”.
Patsy that I was, I’d reply, “what’s the good news, Dad?”
“That is the good news, possum. The bad news is – there isn’t going to be enough to go around.”
For those whose fathers had a similarly despondent view of the planet and our environmental management of it, I would like to highly recommend that you head to La Boite to see Water Wars by Elaine Acworth. Thought-provoking and challenging, funny and human, I went last week to see this excellent Brisbane production that tackles in a very personal and moving way just what might happen when we all get done watering our concrete. Oh, and the production has fantastic light and sound design – not incidental to the piece, but an intrinsic part of the storytelling.
You have until Saturday.
C’mon Brisbane, I have been driving your streets late at night this past week or so – luxuriating in the environmentally unsound pleasure of a lovely manual car – and you are inside at night and watching the television. Why not mix it up a little? Your theatre people are telling strong stories with heart and challenge and if you don’t go soon, you might miss out!
