morning coffee run

I stood with my back to the sun
watching upwards to a flock of welcome swallows
dancing in the quicksilver air between two office buildings.

Eyes squinting against the refracted summer of the mirrored towers
watching upwards to a flock of welcome swallows
hunting with the living hum of compact wings.

I envied them their sharp attacks, the wind catch movement
watching upwards to a flock of welcome swallows
cooling the side of my face against the wall of an office building,

thinking gently, with languid pleasure, of a sleepless night.
Watching upwards to a flock of welcome swallows
I stood with my back to the sun.
